2020 Astrolabe Kekerengu Sauvignon Blanc

94 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A serious Sauvignon Blanc from the limestone soils of the Kekerengu Coast. These vines are situated on the east coast to the south of Marlborough, where the climate and unique soil composition contributes to Astrolabe's finest and most impressive wines. Elegant and weighty, the Kekerengu Coast might be the best of their classy, European-inspired Sauvignons.

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2018 vintage)

"Tangy, intense sauvignon blanc with its signature oyster-shell-mineral, lemongrass and restrained tropical fruit flavours. Distinctly Kekerengu. 02 DEC 2020."

93/100 and rated "Excellent" by Cameron Douglas MS (2019 vintage)

"Youthful, fruity, varietal and instantly engaging with aromas of freshly juiced passion fruit and lemon, red apple and white flowers, fresh herbs and gooseberry. On the palate - crisp, fresh, fruity, varietal and very tasty. Flavours reflect the nose with a satin texture, contrasting high acidity, a fresh and crunchy mouth-fell and fruit flavours that reflect the nose. Balanced and well made with a lengthy finish." Drink 2020 - 2022+

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2019 vintage)

"Grown at Kekerengu, south of the Awatere Valley, the distinctive 2019 vintage was mostly handled in tanks, but 20 per cent of the blend was fermented in old oak casks. Well worth discovering, it is a highly individual wine, light lemon/green, mouthfilling and lively, with delicate, ripely herbaceous flavours, crisp and long. Finely poised, with a real sense of youthful drive, it should be at its best mid-2021+.”
