Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2020 vintage
"Pale peach blush. Wild strawberry, rhubarb crème brûlée, bottled stone fruit and old rose petals. Full-bodied, dry wine with round, mouth-filling flavours of strawberry conserve, peach and spice. Best enjoyed when young and fresh but has the potential to age gracefully. Excellent as an aperitif or with charcuterie, prawn cocktail, grilled halloumi and blistered shishito or Padrón peppers."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2019 vintage)
“The classy 2019 vintage was grown in the lower Waihopai Valley. A blend of Pinot Noir (85 per cent) and Pinot Gris (15 per cent), it is a bright, light pink, very fragrant and fleshy wine, with strong peach, strawberry and spice flavours, and a smooth, fully dry finish. Delicious young.”
91/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2019 vintage)
"Distinctive, fruity, familiar and refreshing aromatics with sweet cherry and cranberry, rose, strawberry and red apple skin. Equally vibrant on the palate with a lively acidity contrasted by fresh red fruit and berry flavours. Tense, crisp, crunchy and refreshing. Great reflection of an excellent vintage and wine-making. Drink upon purchase and through 2022."
