2019 Voyager Estate Chardonnay

A seriously good Chardonnay from a new import label of ours. Voyager are not only in a region famous for its Chardonnay, but are renowned for their specialised and premium offerings in this varietal. Much like one of our major customer favourites, Vasse Felix, this blend from across Voyager's superb vineyards is able to capture -- at a very reasonable price -- much of the depth and appeal for which their $100 plus Chardonnay labels are known. A must for lovers of both Kiwi and Aussie Chardies, the Voyager Estate should sell through pretty fast.
$44.99 in mixed 6+ or $49.99 per bottle

Its Origins

Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday (2018 vintage)

"Four clones, four estate blocks, four tonnelleries and innumerable vinification approaches. This lends substance to the number of newly created labels; here the acidity sends a farewell lift to the finish and aftertaste. Length, life and grace."

95/100 Huon Hooke (2018 vintage)

"Bright, light to mid-straw-yellow with a smoky, struck-flint kind of reductive aroma. The wine is medium-intense and soft-textured, dry and savoury, with hints of malt and vanilla in the mid-palate. A touch of grip on the finish - but it’s soft and harmonious. This has richness, weight, concentration, balance and length - and refinement. And promises more if kept a little longer."

95/100 The Real Review, Stuart Knox (2018 vintage)

"Pale straw to lemon colour. A touch of flint reduction on nose. Power with precision. The fruit is certainly concentrated in the citrus spectrum, then subtle oak layered over the top with some bacon fat nuances. Alongside all this is a seaside note that meshes with a bright acid line keeping everything lifted and fresh. Drives long and deep with a touch of focusing grip right at the end. Ticks all the boxes for modern Australian chardonnay"
