Its Origins
Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.
What The Critics Say
Gold Medal, New Zealand International Wine Show
4 Stars Raymond Chan (2016 vintage)
Bright, light strawberry pink colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is softly fresh, quite taut and tightly bound with an aromatic core of strawberries, cranberries, pomegranate, watermelon and suggestions of red florals and confectionary. Dry to taste and light-medium bodied, the palate features fresh and bright fruit flavours of strawberries, cranberries, pomegranate, quince and fruit pastille confectionary. The flavours are gentle in expression. The mouthfeel is refreshing and softly mouthwatering with lacy acidity enlivening the fruit. The wine flows with good energy underlined by a soft-textured line, leading to a soft, dry, thirst-quenching finish. Serve as an aperitif, with tapas and dim sum over the next 2 years. 100% Hawke’s Bay Merlot fruit gently pressed with minimal skin contact and tank-fermented to 12.5% alc. and 2.5 g/L RS. 17.0/20 Aug 2016 RRP $23.95."
