2019 Spinifex Barossa Aglianico

93 Points Richard Caro

A delicious Australian expression of this rare southern Italian grape. Peter Schell of Spinifex is nothing if not independent-minded, and this non-standard bottling of Aglianico grown on the nearby Adelaide Hills reflects a willingness to value grapes and sources for their sheer textual and flavour potential. From quartz clay and granite soils at 300m. With a late ripening variety at altitude, these are always Spinifex's last vines to be harvested. Offering a full display of the grape's vibrant fruits and mineral-savoury dimension, this wine has X-factor and luscious drinkability. Stocks are limited!

What The Critics Say

93/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Steven Creber (2018 vintage)

"Whole berry ferment with wild yeast, 10 months in seasoned French oak. A mixture of sweet and savoury on the bouquet with ripe raspberry and dried herb aromas. The palate is a bit of an ambush; juicy and jubey initially, and then tannin which seems to get drier with every mouthful. I think it's more suited to drink with a meal rather than taste forensically."

93/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie (2017 vintage)

"From the significantly Italian-accented Amadio vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, this aglianico is a departure from the Rhone staples that form the baseline of Pete Schell of Spinifex’s work. Cool breeze. Sour and ripe cherry scents, a touch of raspberry lolly, green herbs and faint fennel. The palate is juicy, soft in a way, touched by sweet-sour fruit character, fine sheath of tannins, tangy acidity and good swirl of gummy tannin. This is great fun to drink, it feels, with detail in tow. Very nicely done."

93/100 Huon Hooke (2017 vintage)

"Very deep, bold, glass-staining purple/red colour. The aromas are fresh and bright, young and clean and modern, fruit-driven and bold. The palate is likewise full-bodied and rounded, fruit-sweet and soft, with lots of ripe berry fruits, and ample but supple tannins, which provide an excellent backbone. A delicious modern style. 27 MAR 2019."
