2019 Spade Oak Prospect Gisborne Chardonnay

Its Origins
Steve Voysey has had a hand in making some of New Zealand’s great Chardonnays from Gisborne over the years. His claim to fame is arguably developing the ‘O’ for ‘Ormond’ wine which ended up being one of Pernod-Ricard’s best wines. Since Steve has left to make his own wines, he has continued to craft superior Chardonnays. I’m sure he would give considerable credit to the other influences, such as site and soil from where the fruit is sourced, indigenous yeasts and barrel-fermentation. Steve isn’t a fan of the reductive ‘gunflinty’ style, and has proven that great Chardonnay can be made in styles without it. -- Raymond Chan
What The Critics Say
18.5/20 Ramond Chan Wine Reviews, Candice Chow
"Bright, medium yellow with a gold hue, even colour throughout. The nose is coy, gently releasing aromas of lemon, peach, cream, interweaved barrel flint, subtle almond and cashew mix. Medium-full bodied, there is a purity sense of peach, lemon, grapefruit pith, along with hazelnuts, roasted almonds, barrel spices linger with a buttery, creamy palate. The flavours are well-proportioned with define layers, elegant and restrained. The nutty oak and creaminess are controlled and integrated, flows with an aromatic phenolic line, drives with fresh and balanced acidity to a long finish. Match with grilled Tiger prawns and whitefish with beurre blanc over the next 3-5 years. Mendoza clone, handpicked. 100% barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc, 25% new, partial MLF, aged 11 months in French oak. 18.5+/20 pts Sept 2020 RRP $28." Drink 2020 - 2025
