2019 South River Reserve Central Otago Pinot Noir

A sweet discount on this under-the-radar Central Otago Pinot Noir label. The South River site is located in Tarras and was established under vine in 2005 by Robin and Matt Dicey, the father-and-son team who were behind the fame of Mt Difficulty. Made by a French winemaker, Anthony Wurch who makes wine for the award winning Tarras The Canyon (he also spent time at Peregrine). All the wine is from a single vineyard, hand picked and 100% barrel aged with 20% new French Oak. Under its current ownership, the South River site produces grapes of such quality that they also supply labels like Chard Farm. A wine of real finesse and savoury-mineral nuance, the South River is a great buy at this discount price!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

South River is the wine venture of Kenneth McGrath who is based in Auckland and has a farming and consultancy background. In 2012 Kenneth acquired the 31 ha vineyard on Maori Point Road on the flats of Tarras, Central Otago, which was established in 2005 by Robin and James Dicey. It is planted to 20.5 ha of Pinot Noir, and 10.5 ha of Pinot Gris, of various clones on grafted rootstock. Jason Thompson of Viticultura has the on-site vineyard management responsibilities, and Kenneth and Jason are working towards BioGro organic certification. Much of the fruit is contracted to Matua and Chard Farm, with the inaugural own-label South River wines coming from the 2014 vintage. The winemaker is Antony Worch of Alexandra Vintners. Here, I review multiple vintages of the Pinot Rosé, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. (Raymond Chan)

What The Critics Say

Yvonne Lorkin

"Crafted by Antony Worch at Alexandra Vintners and carefully shepherded to the winery by the multi-talented Kenneth McGrath, this pinot noir is hugely aromatic and heaving with berry blossoms, black tea and motorcycle-leathers. Wild cherry, blueberry and fuzzy, woolly notes make this a fresh, youthful yet highly complex pinot noir. Apple skin astringency and warmth on the finish make this a memorable sip and showcases how a challenging vintage can be carefully handled. Very youthful, so hang on to it for another year or three."
