2019 Shaw and Smith M3 Adelaide Hills Chardonnay

96 Points Decanter
In stock
A modern classic of Aussie Chard from a more moderate, elevated climate. It is flinty, nutty and citric — like many of our finest Kiwi examples — yet with an elegance and restraint of which our most ambitious producers would be envious. An international legend of stylish Chardonnay, and supreme value at the price, the M3 is too classy to ignore.
$45.99 in mixed 6+ or $51.99 per bottle

Its Origins

Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith own two vineyards, in Lenswood and Balhannah. Balhannah is also home to the winery where the Tasting Room is open daily. Growing the best possible grapes, managing vineyards sustainably, and valuing vine health, soil health, and low yields are central to the Shaw + Smith approach. In the pursuit of quality, all grapes continue to be hand-picked, and the wines are fermented, aged and bottled on site at Balhannah. The wines are vibrant, medium bodied expressions of their varieties that reflect their sites and region.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Decanter, David Sly

"The nose presents a strong and compelling argument: firm white peach, pretty lemon blossom, a whiff of charred oak and a puff of graphite lurking beneath struck flint. Strikingly reminiscent of Penfolds' Bin Reserve Bin A, it helps define a new high-watermark for Adelaide Hills Chardonnay. With a slender, nimble palate that is deceptively long, its clean persistent flavours and subtle complexity leaves you contemplative long after the glass is empty. Released at AU$49." Drink 2020 - 2028

96/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson

"Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay is in quite exceptional form. Brilliant release. Great intensity both to the palate and the finish and with plenty going on besides. Flint, smoke, grapefruit and stone fruit characters but it’s the emphatic energy of the finish that really sets it apart. One sip and I was hooked, convinced, and in its thrall." Drink 2023 - 2027+

95/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Tony Love

"The clear expression of on-point ripe peach and nectarine fruits is this wine's calling card. A delicate little wrap of oak adds the spice of ginger-nut biscuit with the swell of an appealing creaminess; subtle acidity holds it in balance all the way. Fruit, oak, spice and tang - the whole varietal experience." Drink by 2030
