The Passage Rock dream was first conceptualized in 1991 when founders David and Veronika Evans Gander sat together in an ancient West Australian forest surrounded by vineyards. The concept to create fantastic wines in a beautiful place near the sea was merely the dream of two young people in their prime seeking their way in life. After purchasing the property in 1993, the first vines were planted in 1994 in the head of the beautiful Te Matuku valley in the southeastern end of Waiheke Island. In 1996, bucking the trend and taking a calculated risk Syrah was planted. Since 2001 Passage Rock has become Waiheke Island's most awarded winery in both New Zealand and International competitions, winning multiple gold medals and trophies for the Reserve Syrah. Passage Rock is a love affair that follows the will of the seasons and the instincts of the vintner.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2013 vintage)
"Dense, ripe, weighty Syrah with dark berry, plum, dark chocolate, cracked black pepper and nutty oak flavours. Richly textured wine with an impressive depth of sweet fruit artfully balanced by ripe tannins. Able to be appreciated now but with good cellaring potential 22/4/2015."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 vintage)
"Waiheke's most awarded wine of the past decade is partly estate-grown at Te Matuku Bay, on the south side of the island, supplemented by fruit from Oneroa. Matured in American and French oak barriques, mostly new, it is typically a powerful, opulent red, rich and well-rounded. The 2014 vintage (5*) is still very youthful. Dark, full-bodied and sweet-fruited, with vibrant blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, it is notably concentrated, but also supple and fragrant. Best drinking 2018+."
