A legend of Australian Natural winemaking that was sourced from very old vines in the McLaren Vale. Ochota Barrels are a sought-after producer who make X factor wines according to very lo-fi and non-intervention principles. Very rare and special, this is a light-bodied but full-flavoured Grenache to drink now or cellar.

Its Origins

"Ochota barrels is run by Taras Ochota and his wife Amber. He’s a surf dude who also plays bass in a band. Super cool guy. Taras [Ochota], who has an enology degree, previously worked for Two Hands and Nepenthe, and also worked as a European flying winemaker for a Swedish import company. In addition, he has extensive experience working in California. But he recently gave the day job up to concentrate on his own project. He started making the Ochota Barrels wines back in 2008 and currently produces around 1200 cases. These are astonishingly good wines, with nothing added save for a bit of sulfur dioxide. Home is in Adelaide Hills, but he also buys grapes from other places." -- Jamie Goode

What The Critics Say

95/100 The wine Front, Gary Walsh (2018 vintage)

"Raspberry, exotic spices, pencils, earth and roses. Just medium-bodied, almost delicate, with soft and pretty red fruits threaded through with firm graphite tannin that spreads wide and carries a wave of fine spiced Grenache flavour long and true. A delight."

Winemaker notes on previous 2018 vintage

"A fragrant thread of wild herbs, fennel seed and charcuterie is underpinned with raspberry, violets and Asiatic spice. The taut nervous tension of compact red currents and Satsuma plum fills the mid-palate with mouth-watering red berry intensity. Finely grained tannins position this svelte, fleshy, and measured weight of forest cherries and persimmon into a long succulent and savoury finish." - Taras Ochota

95/100 Huon Hooke (2015 vintage)

"The bouquet is intense, deep, complex, spicy and layered. An intriguing wine. In the mouth, it's elegantly structured, tight and firm, deep and long. A fine-boned, well-structured wine. Very stylish and high quality. (4, 568 bottles produced) 14 MAR 2016."
