A rare and delicious Chablis style from this top class Chardonnay producer. This showcases what makes Neudorf legendary. Because the quality and distinctiveness in their expensive Moutere Chardonnay -- the "Moutereness" as they call it -- is the way refined fruit is imbued with a whiff of wet chalk from the chalk-clay gravel soils of this vineyard. This Twenty Five Rows label captures this chalkiness and focus in a Chablis treatment of indigenous fermentation with no oak and no malolacatic effects. Crisp and precise but delicate and flowing, the Twenty Five Rows is a must try for fine Chardonnay lovers. Stocks are low!

Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)

"Tight and slightly closed chardonnay, with obvious chalky mineral character that seems to be a Neudorf chardonnay trademark. I also noted a suggestion of white flowers with subtle apple and nectarine flavours. A steely, focused wine with potential. Good value at this price 8/9/2017."

4.5 stars Michael Cooper (2016 vintage)

"The 2016 vintage (4.5*), estate-grown and hand-harvested at Upper Moutere, was fermented with indigenous yeasts in tanks and then matured on its yeast lees, with some handling in old oak puncheons. Bright, light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling, fresh and youthful, with ripe, citrusy, peachy flavours to the fore, excellent vibrancy and intensity, mealy notes adding complexity, and a tightly structured finish. A very elegant wine, it should be at its best mid-2018+."
