2019 Neudorf Rosie's Chardonnay
Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.
What The Critics Say
95/100 and rated Excellent, Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
"This is a barrel ferment expression and with just 8% new French -in total- used the emphasis is on purity, vine age and refinement with a bouquet voice on site first, a core of fruit second and fine judicious use of oak third. A lovely soft creamy texture on the palate with flavours of fresh orchard fruits and citrus then a youthful squeeze of acidity a lite salty edge. The oak, acidity and alcohol provide a sound foundation and there's a fine spice with an equally fine savoury edginess adding complexity and depth. Delicious." Drink 2021 - 2027+
94/100 Gary Walsh The Wine Front
"Rosie Finn is second gen Finn at Neudorf and a bloody legend. Super good there is some dirt and vines named after her. Lively, lightly buttery, a little crispness, citrusy and a good splash of nectarine juice. Vibrant chardonnay, clatters along with electric pulse and zesty, zingy feels. Tense, taut and a little flinty-minerally thing going on in texture (and aroma) too. Delicious! Such a joyous chardonnay here in a prettier, lighter frame. Frisky stuff." Drink 2021 - 2027
93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2018 vintage)
"Stylish chardonnay with peach, grapefruit, hazelnut, spicy oak and brioche flavours supported by gentle, fruity acidity. A weighty wine with a pleasingly silken texture."
