Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
"An incredibly youthful, precise, mineral and floral centric bouquet. Aromas of fresh white peach and pear, white blossoms and wet stones showing its own smoky edge. There’s a quiet layer yet noted layer of fresh new barrel scents. Equally youthful on the palate with blossoms and mineral flavours leading then citrus, some pith, white fleshed fruit flavours and a balanced judicious use of oak offering a lite dusting of wood tannins and hint of toast. Youthful with medium+ acidity and flavours, a very new tasting wine with a premier cru feel." Drink 2021 - 2026+
96/100 Bob Campbell (2018 vintage)
"Rich, concentrated, mouth filling chardonnay with a medley of fruit (stewed apple and peach) together with a collection of slightly more savoury flavours including roasted nut, hazelnut, brioche, sizzled butter and struck flint, mineral characters. I find the wine slightly broader and perhaps weightier than usual, although it retains vineyard identity and power. Should cellar well 19 OCT 2019"
