Hunting Hill is one of Kumeu River's special single vineyard labels. It offers that lovely ripeness and defined fruit but in a more focused style, with delicate weight and pronounced flinty/mineral themes. The site was planted in 1984 on the slope above the legendary Mate's vineyard, before a replanting in 2000 revealed a new single vineyard quality that is now a legend in itself. This will be delicious soon, but is recommended for cellaring.

Its Origins

In 1938 Maté Brajkovich arrived in New Zealand with his parents, who settled in Kumeu and in 1944 bought a small vineyard which would later become Kumeu River wines. For a few decades Maté mostly made simple fortified and sparkling wines. It wasn't until 1982 however, when Matés son Michael took over, that the wines would really start to turn heads. Michael and his siblings began to transform the vineyard and vinification practices to more considered, traditional ways, with hand harvesting, improved drainage, judicious use of oak and only using the wild yeast present in the vineyard to bring a sharper definition of terroir into the wines. Matés vineyard is the original land bought in 1944, re-planted by Maté just before his death with low-yielding Mendoza clone Chardonnay in 1990.

What The Critics Say

98/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Fantastic bouquet - captivating with great depth and complexity, pure and definitive. Flavours of peach and ripe, fleshy apricot, meyer lemon zest and cashew, oak spices and rose-skinned apple. This package then repeats again and again. Contrasting acidity to the pure fruit core, a light saline note adding complexity and charm. Persistent flavours, lengthy finish, complex and urgent. A fantastic wine, ready for the cellar. Best drinking from late 2021 through 2026+. Drink 2021 - 2026+

97/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Taut, mouth-watering chardonnay in a rather Burgundian style, with a nice blend of fruit, oyster-shell, toast, spice and nutty oak flavours. Good weight and concentration. Accessible now but should respond well to a little bottle age. 28 JUL 2020." Drink 2020 - 2028
