Ex-Cloudy Bay Winemaker has expertise to burn in this classic expression of Marlborough Sav. Having said that, it's no show pony. Llike many the most accomplished examples, this wine offers concentration and texture while tempering those piercing fruit and floral characters against a more restrained and complex background, partly provided by a portion fermented with indigenous yeast. A deserved classic and a must-try in this style.

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1993 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own. This quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Toni Patterson (2018 vintage)

"Mid-straw colour. A complex nose with gentle sulfides and lemony scents. The palate is deliciously intense and juicy, with outstanding depth and excellent varietal integrity. This acidity heightens the flavours. A sophisticated, harmonious wine with excellent character and presence 23 APR 2019."

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2018 vintage)

"Moderately concentrated, tangy and quite herbaceous sauvignon blanc with capsicum, lemongrass and gooseberry flavours with a restrained tropical fruit influence. Nice purity, texture and length 06 MAY 2019."

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 vintage)

Grown in the central Wairau Valley and the Southern Valleys, the 2018 vintage (4.5*) was handled principally in tanks (a small percentage was fermented with indigenous yeasts in old barrels). Light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling, fresh and vibrant, with generous tropical-fruit flavours to the fore, a herbaceous undercurrent, excellent depth, and a dry, lengthy finish.
