2019 Greywacke Marlborough Pinot Gris

95 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
A rich-textured but dry Pinot Gris from Marlborough. Made by the ex-Cloudy Bay people at Greywacke, this wine displays real knowledge of the region and its varieties. Beautifully aromatic in an exotic, sophisticated sort of way, it is rounded and generous on the palate — but not too sweet. Seamless and classy, this is proper wine for the sunny deck or the table.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1993 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own. This quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Complex and enticing bouquet wit aromas of white spice and lees, wild flowers and exotic fruits, apple and pear. The wine coats the palate with flavour and texture, leaving behind the taste of white fruits, spices and flowers. Perfectly balanced, silky and well made, complex and just dry on the finish. Best drinking from purchase and through 2026+." Drink 2021 - 2026+

95/100 Huon Hooke (2017 vintage)

"Light to mid-yellow colour. The bouquet is very ripe and rich, with exotic fruit aromas including spiced poached stone fruits and traces of passionfruit, pineapple and guava. The palate is full and rich, round and almost opulent, with gorgeous texture and harmony, a taste of lychee and a trace of sweetness enhancing its irresistible drinkability. It's veering towards an Alsace vendange tardive style. Delicious! 10 JUN 2020."

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)

"Ripe, flavoursome pinot gris with stewed apple and pear flavours, together with appealing spice and savoury characters. Made in an off-dry style, with subliminal sweetness on the finish thanks to a juicy cut of mouth-watering acidity. 29 FEB 2020."
