2023 Greywacke Marlborough Pinot Gris

94 Points John Caro
In stock
A rich-textured but dry Pinot Gris from Marlborough. Made by the ex-Cloudy Bay people at Greywacke, this wine displays real knowledge of the region and its varieties. Beautifully aromatic in an exotic, sophisticated sort of way, it is rounded and generous on the palate — but not too sweet. This is proper Pinot Gris for the seafood barbeque and dinner table.

Its Origins

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1993 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own. This quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.

What The Critics Say

Cameron Douglas MS, The Shout Magazine

"Complex, varietal, pure fruit core, floral, layers of mineral and fine lees complete the bouquet. On the palate - equally complex and fruit centric with flavours of white fleshed fruits laced with exotic spices, a touch of dried herb and citrus peel. Warm and generous with a satin texture, medium+ acidity and lengthy finish. Delicious! Best drinking upon purchase and through 2026."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2021 vintage)

"The powerful 2021 vintage was hand-picked, mostly fermented in old French oak barriques, and then all matured in old barrels for a further six months. Weighty and concentrated, it has deep, vigorous stonefruit and spice flavours, showing excellent complexity and harmony, and a lengthy, off-dry finish."

94/100 Real Review, Huon Hooke (2021 vintage)

"Light yellow/straw hue with a struck-match flinty reductive high note, the palate is rich and intense yet also subtle and refined in its texture, generous and harmonious along the length. A whisper of sweetness, well controlled. Ripe yellow stone-fruits fill the tightly coiled palate. Excellent wine."
