Great discount on this rich but refined Gris from Waipara. The last vintage of this was the only Gris from outside France to make the Top 10 wines in Decanter's World Pinot Gris Tasting. The "Sand Dollar" is a step up to the single-vineyard range, named after the sea fossils that appear in these calcerous Waipara soils. It is a favourite of Greystone winemaker Dom Maxwell (NZ Winemaker of he Year 2018), who is a master of this gently unctuous yet delicate, and aromatic style. The renowned Sand Dollar is a steal for this heavy discount.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

After searching the world for the perfect place to grow cool-climate wines, the Thomas family established the Greystone Vineyard on the slopes of the Teviotdale hills in the Waipara Valley in 2004. They planted 39 hectares of the 153 hectare property of predominantly north-westerly facing land, concentrating on matching blocks with clones and varieties. There were many options with a range of altitudes from 60m to 150m above sea level and soil profiles from light clays through to those rich in limestone content. While Pinot Noir makes up over 60% of the plantings they could see the potential for other varieties in the region and planted blocks of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and even a small block of Syrah.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2019 vintage

Picked in one lot, this dry-style Pinot Gris was gently pressed to tank and settled before most of the juice was transferred to tank for fermentation. The remaining portion of juice was fermented in old French oak barrels and left to rest on full yeast lees for five months before blending and estate bottling without fining.

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2018 vintage)

"A stunning expression of the variety; the inviting bouquet shows white flesh stone fruit, rockmelon, poached pear and floral characters with a touch of oatmeal complexity. The palate delivers excellent concentration and generous mouthfeel, gorgeously enhanced by velvety texture and perfectly pitched acidity. www.greytonewines.co.nz. May 2019."

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2018 vintage)

"Organic pinot gris with pear, stone fruit, ripe apple and root ginger lees character. Weighty wine with a delicately peppery texture. A satisfying and sophisticated pinot gris in a dry style 18 MAY 2019."
