2019 Giesen Clayvin Vineyard Pinot Noir
Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
Giesen Wines are a long established label on the New Zealand scene. But as the family have gained expertise and expanded into personal projects - such as Marcel Giesen’s little known but lauded boutique Waipara estate, Bell Hill - the Giesen label too has shifted to capture their deep expertise in terroir and technique by adding new high-investment, single vineyard offerings such as those from the "revered" Clayvin vineyard, made famous by Fromm wines. The three German brother’s Alex, Theo and Marcel came to New Zealand to establish their first Riesling vineyards in Canterbury. In a then-small market, the Geisen brand grew with the times to take a position as one of New Zealand’s leading producers, and still enjoys a significant local and international distribution for various levels of high quality wine in many varieties and styles. Their new mid and upper level offerings are gaining significant recognition: wines like the Clayvin Pinot Noir is not only from great terroir but beautifully styled, placing it second to none among New Zealand’s premium examples of the grape.
What The Critics Say
98/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Offering stunning fruit purity and poise, the wine shows dark cherry, floral, clove and toasted almond notes on the nose. It's concentrated and velvety in the mouth delivering awesome depth and power, while remaining graceful and elegant. At its best: 2023 to 2034. $57.00. www.giesenwines.co.nz. Feb 2022." Drink 2023 - 2034
97/100 and "Outstanding" Cameron Douglas MS
"As the aromas of this wine invade the senses and the wine reaches ambient temperature a myriad of scents begin to unfold from white smoke and mineral, pure red berry fruit aromas, a gun flint and fine dried herb and judiciously layered oak complement. Complex and beguiling. Youthful and complex on the palate with fine chalky tannins and acidity engaging first. The flavours of red berries and spiced plums, savoury dried herb all fuse together on the palate. A lengthy complex wine that will reward those who choose to cellar this fine example. Best drinking from 2025 through 2035." Drink 2025 - 2035
95/100 NZ Wine Rater
Intense, youthful, attractive, fruit-driven bouquet with a sweet lift of sour cherry, lavender, dark chocolate, toasted vanilla pod, liquorice and charry oak. Full-bodied, bright, ripe, concentrated and juicy with well-structured, complex tannins and a spicy, energized finish.
