2019 Gerard Bertrand L'Hospitalet Grand Vin La Clape
Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre
Wine Enthusiast named his winery Europe’s best in 2011, but Gerard Bertrand began as a rugby player representing France and Narbonne. It wasn’t until the early death of his father that he returned to take the reigns of the family operation, Domaine de Villemajou in Boutenac, Corbieres. He soon identified the potential of the Languedoc-Roussillon to produce rich yet bright, modern wines suited to world market trends and from there began acquiring labels and properties across the region. Balancing an organic and increasingly biodynamic viticulture with an evangelical zeal for exporting his Mediterranean ‘Art de Vivre’, Gerard Bertrand has quickly become one of the most important champions of that which epitomises Southern French wine of today: superb quality in quantity.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak
"Limestone soils are dominant in this marine-influenced vineyard, and this is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Aged 12-16 months in new oak. Wonderful floral, rich nose of pepper, olive and meat with sweet Syrah to the fore, and also some garrigue character. Amazing sweetly fruited palate with good tannin under the blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry fruit. Seductive but well defined."
95/100 Decanter (2018 vintage)
"Fabulous smoky liquorice, molasses and tar contrast beautifully with lush bright fruit characters; enticing and persistent with a mouthwatering texture and a long, powerful finish."
17/20 Jancis Robinson MW (2018 vintage)
"Very heady, ripe nose with some black-pepper notes. Big and bloody with some salty Syrah notes and also the spiciness of Mourvèdre. Very luscious indeed. Lots to discover here. Exciting and energetic rather than fat. Good lift. Syrah, Grenache and 10–20% Mourvèdre. Maceration of 25–25 days aged for 12–16 months in barriques with occasional stirring. G B describes this as 'a destination winery', where he holds a summer jazz festival and there is a restaurant etc. La Clape was an island and Narbona (Narbonne) was the capital of Gaul. Very distinctive flora on this vast property. The 2017 was celebrated by the International Wine Challenge." Drink 2020 - 2030
