A rich Shiraz from a serious organic producer. Gemtree make reds that are harmonious and natural, but also inky-dark and luscious. Thier organic McLaren Vale vineyards produce ripe juice that goes through an indigenous fermentation then 12 months in large and small French oak. Ethical and sustainable, but rich and satisfying. There is serious value in this bottle!

Its Origins

"Following a wine retail background going back to 1966, Paul and Jill Buttery established Gemtree Vineyards in 1980 when they purchased a vineyard on Tatachilla Road in the McLaren Vale. The grew the business releasing their own Gemtree label in 1998. Son Andrew Buttery now heads the company, and his sister Melissa and her husband Mike Brown look after the viticulture and winemaking. The company has made the commitment to sustainability, practising biodynamic farming and achieved Australian Certified Organic certification in 2011. Gemtree owns over 130 ha of vineyards across three main sites and makes a large range of wines over different tiers." Raymond Chan

What The Critics Say

93/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday

"Selectiv'-harvested, whole berry open ferment, 7 days on skins, pressed to French oak (5% new) to complete primary fermentation. Rolls Royce treatment." Drink by 2034

91/100 Huon Hooke

"Deep, dark colour, with a brooding blackberry and dark plum bouquet. A touch of soot or graphite. The wine is full-bodied and firmly-structured, concluding with a good grip, solid but not astringent. A more savoury shiraz with good black pepper and spice, authoritative structure and a touch of elegance. 09 AUG 2020." Drink 2020 - 2030
