2023 Felton Road Bannockburn Riesling

92 Points James Suckling
In stock
A luscious and sweetish style from Felton's mature vines. The word 'tension' comes up a lot for this wine, but after extensive testing we've experienced no nervous side-effects whatsoever. It seems the word refers to the wine's edgy balance of sweetness and crisp mineral acidity. Lush-fruited, floral and stony-tasting, Felton Road's classy biodynamic winemaking shows once again why they're on top. And all this comes with less alcohol than some beers these days!

Its Origins

Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. It dates back to 1991 when Stewart Elms planted the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. Blair Walter has been winemaker here since 1996, right from the start. The total vineyard area is now at 32 hectares. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality. Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.

What The Critics Say

92/100 James Suckling

"Fantastic clarity and transparency in this wine with fresh strawberries and cherries. So bright. Medium to full body with very fine tannins that are integrated and energetic. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)

"Taut yet luscious riesling, with moderate sweetness balanced by juicy acidity to give the wine a delicious tension. Wonderfully pure with a mix of citrus and stone fruit flavours and a hint of mango. 16 SEP 2021."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2019 vintage)

"Estate-grown in The Elms Vineyard, this gently sweet style has deep flavours woven with fresh acidity. It offers more drink-young appeal than its Dry Riesling stablemate, but invites long-term cellaring. Hand-picked and tank-fermented with indigenous yeasts, it is bottled with a high level of residual sugar (50 grams/litre in 2019). The 2019 vintage (5*) is a Mosel-like wine, still very youthful. Bright, light lemon/green, it is intense and vibrant, with strong peach, lemon and apple flavours and a crisp, lasting finish. Best drinking 2022+."
