2019 Felsina Berardenga Chianti Colli Senesi
The estate vineyards straddle the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi region, and are quite close to the town of Siena. There are 61 hectares of vines in all, but the property is much bigger, totalling 475 hectares, and including olive trees, wheat fields and forests. The name Felsina dates back to the Etruscan people, and back to 2000 BC. Many words in Italy beginning with ‘Fel’ or ‘Bol’ have Etruscan roots. The modern era of Fèlsina began in 1966 when current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s father-in-law acquired the property. They began with 9 hectares of vines, but grew this by massale selection to its current size, and acquired a second property: Castello di Farnetella, in the Colli Senesi.
What The Critics Say
90/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni (2018 vintage)
"Fèlsina's Chianti Colli Senesi is wonderfully refined and gracious in 2018. The moderate growing season yielded a Chianti with striking translucence and real class. Sweet red fruit, blood orange, mint, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco add lovely aromatic nuance throughout. The 2018 is elegant and so expressive." Drink 2021 - 2039
90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2015 vintage)
"The 2015 Chianti Colli Senesi Berardenga is a tonic, almost crunchy red wine with an impressive level of fruit purity. Remember that part of the Sangiovese blend that makes the iconic Toscana IGT Fontalloro sees fruit sourced from this very same site. This property in the Chianti Colli Senesi appellation produces fruit that is linear, crisp and bright. The vines are getting old enough now to show more nuanced complexity in their fruit. This is a very interesting wine that will drink beautifully for the upcoming years."
