Winemaker Simon Waghorn has this to say about Durvillea: “All along Marlborough’s coast, clinging to rocks at low tide is the seaweed Durvillea. We know it as bull kelp or rimurapa. As a young man at university I studied seaweed. Named for the captain of the Astrolabe, Durvillea seaweed is my quintessential emblem of our wild coast. The Durvillea grapes are grown in the Waihopai, Wairau and Awatere Valleys of Marlborough. The grapes are harvested at precisely the right moment and I preserve the purity and intensity of flavour in my winemaking. Durvillea is Astrolabe’s little sister label. This provides us with the opportunity to offer another range of classic Marlborough wines from our Astrolabe vineyards.”
What The Critics Say
91/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Moderately intense, ripe peach, apple and citrus and grapefruit flavours that reflect an excellent vintage. Supple chardonnay with a perfect balance of fruit sweetness and fruity acidity. Elegant rather than blockbuster. 10 JUL 2020." Drink 2020 - 2024
Cameron Douglas MS (2018 vintage)
"Very familiar aromas and a ‘classic’ expression of Chardonnay with vanilla spice and toasty wood, baked yellow stone fruits and butter, some apple and stony mineral moments. Dry and spicy on the palate with vanilla and toasty wood flavours showing first followed by stone fruit and citrus. Moderate acidity and just enough oak flavour adding a nice length and smooth creamy finish."
Michael Cooper (2017 vintage)
"Offering good value, the 2017 vintage was hand-harvested in the Wairau Valley and made with use of barrel fermentation and malolactic fermentation. Bright, light lemon/green, it is still youthful, with citrusy, slightly biscuity flavours, showing considerable complexity and very good depth."
