Its Origins

Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Decanter (2016 vintage)

"This was a wine which convinced our judges that all the hard work that has gone into Bordeaux varieties (alongside Syrah) in Gimblett Gravels is beginning to pay off. It's a very dark black-red in colour, and the 63% of Merlot sings out in its soft, seductive black-cherry and black-plum fruits. The soft wealth on the palate is very impressive too, without any rigid acidity and backed, in this case, by some discreetly textured but impressively flavoured tannins (a touch of graphite and coal dust). It's sappy and vinous towards the end: real 'pleasure wine', yet never simple."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2018 vintage)

"A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, malbec, cabernet franc and petit verdot. A rich, weighty red with plum, dark berry, spice, toasty oak and liquorice flavours. Good value at this price. 30 MAR 2021."

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2018 vintage)

"From a blend of Merlot, the Cabernets, Malbec and Petit Verdot - a bouquet of red berries and plums - wild and domesticated versions, violets and stony soil aromas, spicy wood tones as well as loads of energy and freshness. On the palate - lush, fruity and packed with dark and light skinned berries, plums and stony soil flavours. Firm youthful tannins are ripe, contrasting core of fruit, spicy wood tones and palate refreshing acidity. A lovely example, well made and will please many who try this wine."
