2019 Craggy Range Sophia Merlot Cabernet Franc
Merlot and Cabernet Franc
Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship. The "Sophia" is produced entirely from their Gimblett Gravels Vineyard nestled on the right bank of the Ngaruroro River.
What The Critics Say
97/100 and rated #1 of 2019 Merlot Blends from NZ by Bob Campbell MW
"A blend of merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon from Gimblett Gravels. Supremely elegant wine with an array of dark berry and spice flavours. A youthful wine from a top vintage and with masses of cellaring potential. This really is a classic 16 MAR 2021." Drink 2020 - 2039
95+/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh
"Espresso, chocolate, plum, pencil shavings, pepper, violet and black fruit. Fleshy, black fruit and coffee, earthy feel to it, ripe and silty tannin, dense and savoury, good amount of chew and black olive flavour on a long and firm finish. Modern right bank style by way of Hawkes Bay." Drink 2023 - 2032+
