2019 Craggy Range Aroha Martinborough Pinot Noir
Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.
What The Critics Say
98/100 and rated #1 of 2019 Pinot Noirs from Martinborough by Bob Campbell MW
"Made from blocks 9, 10 and 16 using 60% whole-bunches in the ferment and with 14 months in barrel. Intense and utterly delicious pinot noir, with a haunting perfume and silky tannins. Plum and cherry interwoven with floral, violet and a subtle savoury character. Refined power 19 OCT 2020." Drink 2020 - 2029
94+/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh
"63% whole bunch and 36% new French oak. Dark cherry and plum, dried roses, a little sweet spice and cedar, and that regional sort of tamarillo and scrub herb thing. It’s medium-bodied, but quite dense, a little pomegranate tang and chicory bitterness through dark fruit and ripe strawberry, a bit of a ‘mineral’ feel here too, along with well-packed cocoa powder tannin. Finish is long, sappy and quite firm. A more nuanced wine than previous iterations, perhaps. Very good." Drink 2022 - 2030
