2019 Prieure Lichine Margaux
En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2022. One of the value spots in Margaux, Prieure Lichine offers a classical array of refined dark fruits and defined, spicy florals. Its parcels of fruit are among the most scattered in Bordeaux (located on as many as 40 different sites), which may contribute to the wine's remarkable sense of dimension and completeness for the price. A label of rising regard, this is exceptional value over the medium to very long term. To remove foreign exchange risk for our customers, listed prices are all up final landed cost including GST. Payment is due on invoice/order placement, with delivery in mid 2022.
66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot
Château Prieuré-Lichine, a large 4ème Cru Classé Margaux estate, is one of the most fragmented in the Médoc with as many as 40 separate parcels of vines scattered throughout the Margaux appellation. Prieuré-Lichine was purchased in 1951 by the great Bordeaux visionary Alexis Lichine - he improved the quality of the wines through investing heavily in new vineyards and by modernising the vinification techniques. He died in 1989 and the estate is now run by his son Sacha, with guru oenologist Michel Rolland acting as consultant. Prieuré-Lichine has 68 hectares of vineyards and the wine is typically a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. It is matured in oak barriques (40% new) for 18 months. Prieuré-Lichine's relatively high Merlot content gives the wine suppleness and elegance with the wines from the best years possessing a beautifully perfumed nose with a firm structure and good depth of fruit on the palate.
What The Critics Say
93-94/100 James Suckling
"Dense and layered red with blueberry and currant aromas and flavors. It's full-bodied, focused and intense. Nice balance of fruit and tannins. Curious to see if 2019 will be better than the 2018 in the end."
93/100 Decanter, Jane Anson
"Plump black fruits, medium to full intensity plum colour with a violet rim and slate-edged tannins that slow things down on the end of the wine. The trick with a Margaux wine is to get concentration without losing elegance, and they have pulled that off here. It's an excellent Prieuré, with a slow build through the palate, if not quite at the height of the wines that have been produced at this estate in 2016 and 2018 but you are not going to be disappointed here. Tasted twice two weeks apart. Stéphane Derenoncourt consultant." Drink 2026 - 2040
91-93/100 Vinous, Neal Martin
"The 2019 Prieuré-Lichine has a dense and assertive bouquet with blackberry, loamy earth and touches of crushed violet. There is a pastille-like element that comes through with time. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, a pinch of sea salt sprinkled over the black fruit that grips the palate. I wonder if this underwent a bit more extraction this year? Grippy and solid on the finish, this is a broad-shouldered Margaux that will need 4-5 years in the cellar." Drink 2026 - 2060
