En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2022. Les Cruzelles is owned by Denis Durantou and located within sight from his famous Pomerol estate, L'Eglise Clinet. A big brother to the super-value La Chenade (also grown on the estate), this Les Cruzelles Grand Vin offers serious depth and potential as a result of the site's rich, Pomerol-like soils of clay and gravel. A serious prospect for what seems like a strategically low pricing, the undervalued Les Cruzelles is a wine to watch. To remove foreign exchange risk for our customers, listed prices are all up final landed cost including GST. Payment is due on invoice/order placement, with delivery in mid 202.

Overview

Grape

90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc

Its Origins

Chateau Les Cruzelles in Lalande de Pomerol is owned by Denis Durantou, who purchased Chateau Les Cruzelles in 2000 and is better known for owning one of the top estates in Pomerol, Chateau LEglise Clinet. Located in the commune of Neac, not far from his Pomerol estate, the terroir of Chateau Les Cruzelles shares many similarities in terroir with his Pomerol chateau, due to its rich, clay and gravel soil. The 10 hectare vineyard of Chateau Les Cruzelles is planted to 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. This could be the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc in the appellation of Lalande de Pomerol. There is a second wine, Chateau La Chenade. The grapes for La Chenade comes from a combination of the estate’s young vines and the vines planted in the terroir with more sand and gravel, as well as from purchased fruit. La Chenade also includes more Cabernet Franc in the blend to give it more structure. La Chenade is aged in an average of 25% new, French oak barrels. On average, the production of Chateau Les Cruzelles is close to 1,200 cases of wine per vintage.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Decanter, Jane Anson

"For me this stands out above La Chenade, in the yin and yang of these two terroirs. Has more signature of the Pomerol side of Lalande, with rich coffee-tinged blackberry fruits, still with beautiful control and lift. Silky, elegant, concentrated. This is a wine that stands as a tribute to the brilliance of Denis Durantou in these smaller appellations, and is one that you will drink with emotion." Drink 2023 - 2036

92-93/100 James Suckling

"This is smoky, spicy and meaty with blueberry character. It’s medium-bodied with a chewy texture and a tight, pronounced finish. Serious."

90-92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"This wine is produced by Denis Darantou and family of Château L’Eglise-Clinet. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Les Cruzelles (a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc) opens with powerful black fruit scents of ripe blackberries, black cherries and mulberries with underlying floral notions of lilacs and wilted roses and hints of dark chocolate, fertile loam and mossy tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of expressive, crunchy black fruits, framed by chunky tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with a peppery kick."
