2019 Bouchard Monthelie 1er Cru Champs Fulliot

92 Points Parker's Wine Advocate
In stock
An expressive single vineyard Pinot Noir from Burgundy. Clos Les Champs Fulliot offers limestone rich soils with minerality and nice drainage, along with a southeasterly aspect capturing the longest exposure to the morning sun. This terroir is effectively an extension of the vineyard's famous and more expensive neighbour, Volnay Clos des Chenes. As a result, the aromatics are bright and ripe-fruited with the tannins for proper aging. This vineyard has exceptional qualities, but it can't command the price of its Volnay neighbours due to its association with the humbler sites in Monthelie. A sweet spot for mid term and immediate enjoyment.

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

90-92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, William Kelley

"From an early-ripening site, the 2019 Monthélie 1er Cru Clos des Champs Fulliot delivers aromas of plums, cherries, dark chocolate and smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, richly layered and velvety palate that's lively and long. This is a more textural, enveloping interpretation of Monthélie when compared with the racier Duresses, but both are extremely promising in their very different stylistic registers."

89-92/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows

"Here the expressive nose is spicier and a bit more floral as well with its baked plum, black cherry and soft earth scents. I very much like the texture of the medium-bodied flavors that are more precise if not quite as rich or powerful, all wrapped in a mildly sweet finish where a touch of warmth slowly emerges. While qualitatively similar, the texture of this and the Les Duresses are like night and day." Drink 2027+

16+/20 Jancis Robinson MW

"Cask sample. Transparent crimson. A little more savoury and deep-flavoured than the village Monthelie from this producer. Edgy with redcurrant fruit flavour and quite assertive fine, lightly grainy tannins." Drink 2024 - 2031
