2019 Bouchard Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse

93 Points Allen Meadows, Burghound
In stock
A fine Pinot Noir from an old, exclusive vineyard in Beaune. Clos de la Mouse is an ancient walled garden that dates back 800 years, owned entirely by Bouchard so bottled as a monopole. The thick layer of red clay is not a common soil type in Burgundy, and gives unusual richness and a plush texture. This wine is therefore even more approachable than other Beaune Premier Crus, but it retains the local earthy spice in addition to saline and iron/rust nuances of the terroir. From a great vintage, this is piece of history and superb value at this low price.

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

90-93/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows

"Aromas of spiced plum, black cherry and a touch of warm earth are trimmed in admirably subtle wood nuances. The super-sleek, intense and wonderfully energetic medium weight flavors possess fine length on the more overtly structured finale. This is both a bigger and more powerful wine than the Teurons that could use better depth but the given that the aging curve of the '19 Mousse should be extended, more complexity should almost certainly develop in due course." 91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, William Kelley

"Revisited from bottle, the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse is performing brilliantly, bursting with aromas of sweet berry fruit, warm spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, with melting tannins and an ample core of fruit, it's seamless and charming, concluding with a long, expansive finish. This is as fine a young Clos de la Mousse as I've ever tasted." Drink 2021 - 2045

17/20 Jancis Robinson MW

"Cask sample. Light crimson. Rather seductive heady nose with a suggestion of violets. Salty, sweet, seductive fruity palate. Masses of pleasure here already with real enegry on the finish. Juicy and well balanced. What a charmer!" Drink 2022 - 2037
