2019 Big Sky Te Muna Martinborough Pinot Noir
Big Sky Wines is the Te Muna Road Martinborough wine venture of Katherine Jacobs and Jeremy Corban who returned to New Zealand from France in 2005 to make world class, hand-crafted wines that express their origins. Katherine studied and worked in viticulture and winemaking in New Zealand and France, doing vintages in Bordeaux. Jeremy is a fourth generation winemaker, a scion of the famous Corban family. Katherine and Jeremy are part of the fabric of the Te Muna Road district, with well-known neighbours Craggy Range, The Escarpment Vineyard, Te Hera and Julicher Estate around them. Katherine and Jeremy took over a site established by Ian Campbell, with 1.8 ha of Sauvignon Blanc and clone 10/5 Pinot Noir planted in 1989, and 4.2 ha of clone 115 Pinot Noir planted in 1999. They have revitalised the vineyard and personally tend the vineyard. The first crops were sold as contract fruit, but from 2013, their own label ‘Big Sky’ became the main focus, taking 80% of the yield, a reversal of the past.
What The Critics Say
94/100 and rated "Excellent" by Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier
"Savoury, complex, earthy, floral. Aromas and flavours of strawberry compote and ripe red cherry, brown spices and plum, rose and mild toasty barrel complexities. A lovely core of fruit is surrounded by tension and poise from fruit tannins and acidity, a savoury earthy quality layers in complexity. The oak is simply there for support and foundation, but adds its own layer of texture and complexity as well. Youthful, firm, dry, lengthy, well made and ready to drink upon purchase. I would also recommend time in cellar for further flavour and texture developments."
4.5 Stars Michael Cooper
"Delicious young, the refined, savoury 2019 vintage (4.5*) was estate-grown and matured for a year in French oak barriques (12.5 per cent new). Ruby hued, it is fragrant and mouthfilling, with very good depth of cherry, plum and spice flavours, hints of herbs and nuts, and ripe, supple tannins."
18.5/20 Joelle Thomson (2018 vintage)
"Jeremy Corban and Katherine Jacobs are Partners in life and winemaking, producing small quantities of this superlative wine from their Te Muna Road vineyard in Martinborough, where they opened their new-ish cellar door. This wine is dry, full bodied and concentrated with intense flavours of red cherries, earthy aromas and spice. It drinks well now and will definitely improves with time in the cellar for at least five years."
