This delicious staff favourite is what Vouvray is all about. A wine of contradictions, it is plump textured but also fresh, dry and steely-mineral. From 100% Chenin Blanc it is a classic European match with fish, white meat and pork belly. Our own import so grab it while we have it.

Chenin Blanc

Its Origins

After gaining experience in Alsace and Burgundy, Bernard Fouquet established his own winery in 1982 in the Loire, focussed on the Chenin Blanc grape. He soon created a trial and error knowledge of his terroir and by the mid-late 1990s, when Vouvray had a series of stellar vintages, Fouquet wines were among the foremost in the world market for the price. With an emphasis on purity and use of stainless steel, Fouquet aims to capture his respective terroir characteristic in each style: mainly calcareous clay in his dry and dessert wines, mainly flint/silica in his demi-sec and sparkling wines. Today Fouquet’s labels remain inexpensive but are considered to be among Vouvray’s best at any price.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Decanter, Jim Budd

"Before establishing his domaine in 1982 Bernard Fouquet worked for a number of producers in Alsace and Burgundy. He rapidly established himself as one of the new stars of Vouvray, especially with his very fine 1989 and 1990 wines which have aged beautifully. Fouquet's work in the both his vineyards and winery is meticulous. The early drinking Cuvée Silex comes from vines planted on clay-flint soils known locally as Perruches. Vinification is in stainless steel. Tasted in late January this had fine ripe fruit with notes of quince with vibrant, racy acidity in the finish." Drink 2020 - 2028

91/100 Vinous, Jason Wilson

"Light golden in color. The nose is subtle at first, then come beautiful aromas of white flowers, tarragon, mint and a hint of smoke. Fresh, lovely pear and lime zest in the mouth, with underlying smoky and salty notes, and a dry, balanced finish. Refreshing, lively and happy Vouvray. From 50- to 60-year-old vines in flinty soils, aged in stainless steel."

16/20 JancisRobinson.com, Richard Hemming

"Chenin Blanc. Ripe peach fruit, tangy acid and lots of funky, leesy texture. Honeyed but absolutely dry. Slight smoky tone to finish. (RH)." Drink 2020 - 2024
