2022 Ata Rangi Potiki Chardonnay

93 Points Richard Caro

A delicious new Chardonnay label from Ata Rangi. The Potiki Chardonnay is sourced in Martinborough — like their Craighall — though in this case from their younger vines (Potiki means last-born child). The result is a wine of great vibrancy and freshness, which has been expertly handled and rounded out by fermentation and aging in select oak vessels. A lovely new wine from Martinborough's old hands, the youthful Potiki is one to try.

Its Origins

Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with an enviable international reputation for PInot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, wife Phyll and Clive's sister Ali. Clive planted the first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area, after reading a 1978 scientific report which showed Martinborough had a micro-climate similar to that of Burgundy. In 2010 Ata Rangi was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or "Grand Cru of New Zealand". With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson. Ata Rangi is ISO-14001 and SWNZ certified, with a slow move into organic viticulture taking place as of now.

What The Critics Say

93+/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie (2021 vintage)

"Chewy, dense and yet light on its feet. Plenty concentrated, edgy acidity holding in nougat, lemon cream, ginger and cedar notes. It’s a wine needing a touch longer to come together, though intensity and length are notable. Structure in spades. On the fresher, friskier side too. A blend of four vineyards here. An interesting chat about how hard it is to tell sense of place in chardonnay, for the most part, with so much winemaking overlay masking that, per se. So many decisions in chardonnay making have impact on the final wine, indeed, if not more than most varieties. Interesting too that Helen posits that a lot of flinty character in chardonnay seems to come from late sulphur sprays in vineyard, with many aspiring or conspiring to that. The idea that doing less allows chardonnay to show its character in Martinborough, from these sites, is the aim." Drink 2024 - 2030

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)

"Creamy-textured wine with peach, ginger, vanilla, struck flint and spicy oak flavours. Tangy wine with good weight and an appealing texture and a backbone of peppery phenolics. Good now but promises to develop well with bottle age. 30 NOV 2022." Drink 2022 - 2027
