As usual, Ata Rangi makes one of NZ's best Pinot Gris wines. While it is fruit-laden and weighty, it is also dry enough for the delicious florals and minerals to show through. Though delicious now, it has legs for the cellar. A pedigree wine — and for the price it's a stunner!

Its Origins

Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with an enviable international reputation for PInot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, wife Phyll and Clive's sister Ali. Clive planted the first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area, after reading a 1978 scientific report which showed Martinborough had a micro-climate similar to that of Burgundy. In 2010 Ata Rangi was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or "Grand Cru of New Zealand". With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson. Ata Rangi is ISO-14001 and SWNZ certified, with a slow move into organic viticulture taking place as of now.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Rich, creamy and smooth-textured pinot gris, with ripe pear and baked apple flavours together with a subtle seasoning of clove and anise. An appealing wine in a dry style and supported by gentle acidity. 31 OCT 2019." Drink 2019 - 2024

94/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie (2018 vintage)

"Surely named for one of Australia’s great regional airport towns and the of course Lismore is famed for being in the first verse of the classic Aussie song, “I’ve Been Everywhere” which puts it up the rungs too. Hangs out in big barrels, made with lots of personality in mind, though not so much in the zone of weight and icky-slipperiness that many New Zealand gris succumb to. Sulphur is used low and very late with juice just able to hang out on lees – complexity-building stuff. Punchy, assertive and confident gris – texture is lightly chewy-powdery, electric with acidity, shows some glide of pear fruit and a lot of yeasty-nutty character underlying – a much more savoury expression. A superb expression here, proper complex, compelling, deliciousness and yet that sense of architecture that any great white wine gets. All in."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 vintage)

"Grown in the Lismore Vineyard in Martinborough, 400 metres from the Ata Rangi winery, the impressive 2018 vintage (5*) was handled in old, large oak barrels. Bright, light lemon/green, it is highly fragrant and mouthfilling, with excellent depth of vibrant pear and spice flavours, showing good complexity, and a very harmonious, dry (4.5 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish. A distinctive wine with good aging potential, it should be at its best mid-2020+."
