A serious Sauvignon Blanc from the limestone soils of the Kekerengu Coast. These vines are situated on the east coast to the south of Marlborough, where the climate and unique soil composition contributes to Astrolabe's finest and most impressive wines. Elegant and weighty, the Kekerengu Coast might be the best of their classy, European-inspired Sauvignons.

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

93/100 and rated "Excellent" by Cameron Douglas MS

"Youthful, fruity, varietal and instantly engaging with aromas of freshly juiced passion fruit and lemon, red apple and white flowers, fresh herbs and gooseberry. On the palate - crisp, fresh, fruity, varietal and very tasty. Flavours reflect the nose with a satin texture, contrasting high acidity, a fresh and crunchy mouth-fell and fruit flavours that reflect the nose. Balanced and well made with a lengthy finish." 95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2018 vintage)

“Tangy, chalky and quite concentrated sauvignon blanc, with punchy aromatics suggesting gooseberry, lime, capsicum and restrained passionfruit. Bright, fruity acidity adds freshness and energy.”

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 vintage)

"Grown at Kekerengu, south of the Awatere Valley, the distinctive 2018 vintage was mostly handled in tanks, but part of the blend was fermented and matured in seasoned French oak puncheons. Fresh, lively and mouthfilling, it shows very good complexity, vigour and intensity of tropical-fruit and herbaceous flavours, with a dry, long finish.”
