A superb Awatere Sauvignon made by Marlborough's experts in sub-regional whites. The Awatere Valley is a bit cooler than the rest of Marlborough, so there's less overt tropical fruit. Instead a brisk and focused style offers whte-green fruits along with a mineral streak that makes it very refreshing. Classic and just so beautiful in the glass, this is one to try.

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Quite a ripe example of the Awatere Valley style, with hints of mango and passionfruit mixed with more typical gooseberry and cut-grass flavours. Good intensity and a pleasing texture. 6/12/2019." Drink 2019 - 2023

94/100 Cameron Douglas

"Intense, fruity and savoury. Loaded with aromas of fresh herbs and tropical fruits, sweet red apple and peach, wet stone minerality and an even persistent bouquet package. On the palate - crisp, bright, fruity and crunchy with flavours of fresh citrus and tropical fruit, basil and an line of savoury hay and herbs. Youthful too with high acidity easily contrasted by the fruit and its natural sweetness. Balanced and well made, best drinking from today and through 2023+. Drink 2020 - 2023+

5 Stars Michael Cooper

““Full of youthful impact, the vigorous 2019 vintage is a classic sub-regional style. Light lemon/green, it is intensely varietal, with penetrating melon and green capsicum flavours, pure and delicate, and a crisp, fully dry, long finish.”
