2019 Amisfield Central Otago Pinot Noir

93 Points Richard Caro
In stock
Amisfield has deserved reputation for a classy version of the classical Central Otago Pinot. It is rich and fruity but also concentrated and defined, with good depth and structure. Vibrant dark red fruits come with earthy dried herb and savoury notes, making this a clear expression of Central flavour.

Its Origins

Amisfield was established in 1988, a Central Otago based specialist producer of pinot noir and aromatic white wines created from fruit grown on the estate vineyard beneath the Pisa Mountain range in the Cromwell Basin. This privately owned company's 200ha property, once a prominent high country merino station, is one of the largest single vineyard estates in the Central Otago region. Over 80ha is currently planted with the majority of the vines being over ten years old. A state-of-the-art purpose built winery is the focal point of the vineyard and produces 20,000 -30,000 cases of wine annually. Pinot Noir accounts for over 60% of the production with the balance made up of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling. This wine is made from 9 clones of pinot noir and grown on several different soil types, adding complexity to the wine.

93+/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier (2018 vintage)

"Ruby and purple core with a purple rim, bright and shiny appearance. Very youthful bouquet with primary fruit aromas of plums and cherries, moderate intensity scents of oak, fleshy, young, savoury, pretty and inviting. On the palate - Dry, fresh, savoury and textured with a mix of fine to firm tannins, plenty of acidity and a core of fruit. All the raw energy of this wine is on show and needs time to settle in more and begin to harmonise - this is best completed in a cool dark cellar. This wine is also fresh, lively, packed with pinosity and charm and will reward those who decant for service or better still age a little longer with best drinking from later in 2021 through 2026. 93+ Points - would prefer to taste this wine again in 2021 and get a more accurate reading of its quality - which I know is already very high."

93/100 Bob Campbell (2018 vintage)

"Bright, youthful pinot noir with red rose, floral, dark cherry, anise, dried herb, thyme and spicy oak flavours supported by peppery tannins. An elegant wine with obvious cellaring potential."
