A delicious Chardonnay and a new import from one of Western Australia's leading experts. This great value entry level is named for the maritime influence in this region, producing here a bright and juicy expression of the local style with bouyant citrus and stone fruit, carred along by nutty and mineral layers. Classy yet easy going -- and cheap! -- the Girt By Sea is one to try.

Its Origins

Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.

What The Critics Say

91/100 Huon Hooke (2017 vintage)

"Lemon essence aroma, fresh and pure, clean and bright and fruit-driven, oak barely making its presence felt. Fresh herb, green melon and lime and lemon citrus flavours abounding. A very smart wine, if not that complex on the day. It's tight and bright and promises a future."

92/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Philip Rich (2016 vintage)

"The fruit for Voyager Estate's excellent entry point Chardonnay was fermented in both stainless steel and French oak barrels before being matured in old and new barrels for seven months. The result is a fruit driven wine, balanced and delicious wine with ripe stone fruits and cashew. The medium-bodied palate is textured and long."

90/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson (2016 vintage)

"This is Margaret River chardonnay, straight down the line. Ripe and generous but not in any way overblown. Pleasant plus, you could say. Yellow stone fruit, nutty oak, some citrus. Good texture, excellent freshness, works nicely."
