2018 Voyager Girt By Sea Cabernet Merlot
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.
What The Critics Say
91/100 Huon Hooke
"Brambly, dark fruit aromas, with a touch of bayleaf and tobacco. The flavours are mid to heavy-weight with plenty of blackberry, dark cherry and a savoury, dried herbiness. The tannins are firm and the acid is bright in this generously-flavoured but structured cabernet merlot 21 MAR 2021." Drink 2021 - 2031
93/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Campbell Mattinson (2018 vintage)
"It's matured in all-French oak and while it's mostly cabernet and merlot there's a small portion of petit verdot in the mix. It's medium weight and fluid with blackcurrant, milk chocolate and gravel notes slipping amiably through. It has shape and texture but integrity of fruit is key here. No mucking about; this is a good cabernet to drink." Drink by 2030
91+/100 and Recommended, The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson (2018 vintage)
"It’s a blend of cabernet and merlot, obviously, but there’s also some petit verdot in the mix. All French oak nowadays. I like the momentum here. It slips along like a well-oiled time trial team. Blackcurrant, peppercorn, gravel and choc. It’s fluid, medium in weight, good to drink. It’s not mega intense or impressive or anything like that; it’s just good mid-weight cabernet, clean and fresh, with both shape and (attractive) mouthfeel. 91. Maybe 92. Recommended." 2020 - 2028
