A remarkable Chardonnay from what is perhaps Voyager Estate's most famous vineyard for the grape. Here the terroir is again very uniform — though different from Block 5 — with soils of gravelly granite over a blue-clay base. The clone is different too, with Dijon 95 bringing a slighlty greater elegance and detailing to the long, brightly delineated layers of flavour. A wonderful Chardonnay for the decanter or medium-term cellar, the Block 6 is magic. Stocks are low!

Its Origins

Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday

"White peach, plus notes of malt and croissant, join with spices to make an attractive wine. The hand-picked fruit had higher than normal acidity so it was pressed to tank overnight to diminish it and to prompt wild fermentation in barrique." Drink by 2030

95/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson (2017 vintage)

"Dijon clone 95, as opposed to the usual Gin Gin, and quite different as a result. White flowers, almond, flint, pink grapefruit and lime, exotic spices folded in. Light to medium-bodied, fine bones, a fennel/fresh mint coolness, zest and energy, yet still silky and composed. It’s graceful and long, with a quinine laced aftertaste. You’d be pretty well set with a glass of this, and a platter of marron and prawns."
