A superb single vineyard Chardonnay from a legendary Margaret River producer. Voyager Estate are famous for their elegant and sophisticated Chardonnays, with Block 5 being one of their most prized sites. From a very even expanse of free-draining red/brown gravels, the resulting white is as impeccably restrained as it is powerful and age-worthy. A treasue of Western Australia, the Block 5 is one to collect before it goes.

Its Origins

Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday

"Has paid little or no attention to the wet vintage conditions, and with lateral thinking the grapes were hand-picked over 3 days in Feb, good acidity maintained. Batonnage had to be conducted monthly during the maturation process, however mlf was blocked. The result is a chardonnay with a creamy cashew and melon note, and excellent length." Drink by 2028

95/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson (2017 vintage)

"Pear and white peach, fennel and baking spices, almond cream too. It’s powerful, yet kind of subdued, it tastes yellow and of the sun. Sports lime and rind, offers chalk and lemon curd, and finishes smooth and long. It tastes of Margaret River, and a good example of that style it is too. This is all Mendoza clone, or Gin Gin as they call it in Margaret River. I love gin, as an aside. Probably my favourite alcoholic drink. I generally like to mix my gin with some more gin, hence gin gin has resonance."
