With a passion to pursue winemaking in his adopted country, Spaniard Anthony Joseph Vidal purchased a Hawkes Bay racing stable in 1905, converted it into a wine cellar, planted vines and established himself as one of New Zealand's early wine innovators. From these pioneering beginnings, Vidal has gone on to create highly-acclaimed wines from one century to the next. The passion that created Vidal over 100 years ago burns just as brightly today, represented by the eternal flame adorning each bottle of Vidal wine. Modern state-of-the-art technology is used in conjunction with traditional winemaking techniques and some original elements of the building are used for Chardonnay fermentation and maturation. The vineyards are farmed with sustainable and organic practices, thanks to winemaker Hugh Crichton’s passion for the environment.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Varietally pure and fabulously expressed, the wine shows cassis, Black Doris plum, tar, tobacco and cedar characters on the nose. It's wonderfully weighted and finely textured with excellent fruit power and intensity, brilliantly structured by loads of fine chalky tannins. An impressive offering at such great price. At its best: now to 2028. $35.00. www.vidal.co.nz. April 2020." Drink 2020 - 2028
93/100 Carmeron Douglas MS
"Blackberries and oak spices, dark plums and tobacco, purple flowers and clove, dry river stones and dried herbs. Complex, and not overdone. On the palate - firm, youthful, dry, textured. Flavours of dark berries and plum. Dark wood spices and hay, roasted black fruits and clove. Firm tannins and plenty of acidity keep the palate youthful and fresh contrasted by a core of fruit and juicy mid-palate. Lengthy finish, balanced and well made with a violet note at the very end." Drink 2020 - 2024
