Its Origins

With a passion to pursue winemaking in his adopted country, Spaniard Anthony Joseph Vidal purchased a Hawkes Bay racing stable in 1905, converted it into a wine cellar, planted vines and established himself as one of New Zealand's early wine innovators. From these pioneering beginnings, Vidal has gone on to create highly-acclaimed wines from one century to the next. The passion that created Vidal over 100 years ago burns just as brightly today, represented by the eternal flame adorning each bottle of Vidal wine. Modern state-of-the-art technology is used in conjunction with traditional winemaking techniques and some original elements of the building are used for Chardonnay fermentation and maturation. The vineyards are farmed with sustainable and organic practices, thanks to winemaker Hugh Crichton’s passion for the environment.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Ripe, dark fruited and black spiced bouquet. Aromas of fresh raspberry and dark berries, black currant and pepper spice. Violets and clove, toasty wood and vanilla, youthful and intense, vibrant and varietal. On the palate - fleshy, fruity, ripe and textured. Plenty of pepper spice and black currant, dark raspberry and toasty wood spice flavours. Complex, youthful, lengthy and seamless. Abundant tannins and acidity lay down a strong structure and foundation A lovely wine with immediate appeal to Syrah drinkers. An excellent food wine choice." Drink 2020 - 2024

96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)

"Bright, vibrant, high energy syrah with taut violet, berry, pepper and spicy oak flavours. An elegant powerhouse that needs time to release its full potential thanks to a backbone of fine yet assertive tannins. 16 JUL 2018." Drink 2018 - 2026

96/100 Huon Hooke (2016 vintage)

"Deep red/purple colour with a bright, black-peppery nose, loaded with spice and very bright and vibrant. Pepper is uppermost. The wine is elegantly-framed, finely-structured, taut and long on the palate, with refinement and focus, precision and great style. The tannins are soft and fine-grained. A very well defined cool-climate syrah. Outstanding. 06 JAN 2019." Drink 2019 - 2036
