Vidals spare no expense making this Chardonnay for long term, legendary status. It is rich and mouth-filling but not fruit-driven, with prominent nutty and gunflinty details over serious concentration, freshness, creaminess and and textural power. A Chardonnay to both satisfy and think about, this has quickly entered the top rung of most awarded and talked-about Kiwi Chards. With 2016 yet another great vintage, now may be the time to try and buy.

Its Origins

"Vidal Estate has a history stretching back to 1905 when it was established by Anthony Joseph Vidal who emigrated from Spain in 1888 to work for his uncle Joseph Soler, a pioneering winemaker. Under the ownership of the Villa Maria Estates group, Vidal Estate has grown to become its own identity, making distinctive and very high quality wines. With the stewardship of Hugh Crichton, winemaker since 2006, it can be argued that the wines have never been better." Raymond Chan

What The Critics Say

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"The latest rendition of this iconic chardonnay shows ripe nectarine, rockmelon, lemon peel and vanilla characters on the nose with nuances of brioche and flint. The concentrated palate exhibits outstanding depth and expansive mouthfeel, superbly enhanced by creamy texture and firm acidity, providing excellent structure. A magnificent offering displaying great line and length. At its best: 2020 to 2028. $60.00. www.vidal.co.nz. June 2019." Drink 2020 - 2028

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"The 2018 vintage (5*) of Vidal's flagship Chardonnay was grown in two vineyards (Lyons and Kokako), hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques (45 per cent new). Still extremely youthful, it is bright, light lemon/green, with a highly fragrant, complex, slightly smoky bouquet. Weighty and dry, it is a very elegant and ageworthy wine, with intense, crisp, peachy, citrusy flavours that build to a long finish. Best drinking 2022+."
