80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot
With a passion to pursue winemaking in his adopted country, Spaniard Anthony Joseph Vidal purchased a Hawkes Bay racing stable in 1905, converted it into a wine cellar, planted vines and established himself as one of New Zealand's early wine innovators. From these pioneering beginnings, Vidal has gone on to create highly-acclaimed wines from one century to the next. The passion that created Vidal over 100 years ago burns just as brightly today, represented by the eternal flame adorning each bottle of Vidal wine. Modern state-of-the-art technology is used in conjunction with traditional winemaking techniques and some original elements of the building are used for Chardonnay fermentation and maturation. The vineyards are farmed with sustainable and organic practices, thanks to winemaker Hugh Crichton’s passion for the environment.
What The Critics Say
5 Stars Michael Cooper
"This refined red was hand-picked in the Omahu and Vidal vineyards, and matured for 20 months in French oak casks. Deeply coloured, it is fragrant, mouthfilling, rich and supple, with deep blackcurrant and herb flavours, fine-grained tannins and a long, spicy finish."
96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)
"Flagship blend from Omaha Gravels and Te Awa vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels subregion. Cabernet sauvignon varietal characters of blackberry, cassis, mint and cedar dominate while merlot introduces a sweetness and softness to the wine's structure. A very classy red with good potential 16 JUL 2018." Drink 2018 - 2026
96/100 Huon Hooke (2016 vintage)
"Deep red/purple colour, bright and bold, while the bouquet is deep and spicy, rich and ripe with lashings of oak, which is not overdone. The wine is very powerful: full-bodied and dense, concentrated and driving, with loads of extract and grip. Long, satisfying finish. There's a core of fruit sweetness which adds to its deliciousness. A superb wine, which has massive potential for the future. 06 JAN 2019." Drink 2021 - 2036
