A superbly elegant and savoury Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir from the expert, Grant Taylor. This wine deserves to be regarded as one of the finest expression of this famously cooler subregion, where a long-ripening period allows the development of more complex, subtle and savoury fruit flavours. As usual, Taylor draws from a great source: an older vineyard which was the first in the region to be planted in north-south rows, maximising fruit exposure to the sunlight. Finely extracted and yet packed with depth and dimension, this is Central Otago Pinot at its best. Drink now or cellar.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Valli is the personal vocation of pioneering Otago winemaker, Grant Taylor. Grant’s name is synonymous with Otago Pinot Noir. He has been crafting wines in the region since 1993 when there were only 20 hectares planted - today there are over 1700. Grant’s accomplishments are well known in the wine world and he is credited with winning the Best Pinot Noir Trophy at a major International Wine Competition in London an unprecedented four times – a feat achieved by no other winemaker in the world. During the past 19 years he has made the first wines for a number of iconic Otago wineries, but now the serious focus is on his own creation, Valli. Established in 1998 and named after his Great-Great Grandfather, Giuseppe Valli, who immigrated to New Zealand from and Italian winemaking background, Grant founded Valli with the aim of creating true representations of Otago’s subregions with unflinching intensity and purity.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Made with 30% whole-bunches in fermentation, which adds a spicy dimension to this elegant and quite complex pinot noir while leaving access to bright cherry, fresh herb, slate-mineral and spicy oak flavours. Good now but worth waiting a few years. 16 JAN 2020." Drink 2020 - 2027

95/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"When the weather is just right—typically warm years—Gibbston can excel. Valli's 2018 Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir offers up a stunning array of herbal-floral aromas, hinting at roses, tea and mint, all backed by a core of red cherries. It's medium-bodied, silky and fine, with plentiful (but ripe) tannins. The 31% new French oak is scarcely noticeable, submerged under the waves of fruit-driven complexity, and the 30% whole-bunch component is similarly well integrated. What a beauty!" Drink 2020 - 2030

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"The refined, graceful, very youthful 2018 vintage (5*) was hand-harvested, matured for 11 months in French oak casks (30 per cent new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Ruby-hued, it is floral, savoury and supple, with vibrant, berryish, spicy, nutty, slightly herbal flavours, woven with fresh acidity, impressive complexity and a lasting finish." Drink 2022+
