Hawke’s Bay is a very special place for making wine. Its range of slopes, plains and climatic differences, coupled with low humidity and ample ultra-violet light, give winemakers a comprehensive toolkit to showcase their skills. Soils are young and derived from the gravels, silt and sands left behind as the three main rivers of Hawke’s Bay changed course over thousands of years. Te Mata Estate was established here in 1896 specialising in high-quality wines of classical style. The estate was purchased by the Buck and Morris families in the mid 70's, who were influenced by the great wines of France, with Peter Cowley coming on as winemaker in 1984. Peter and viticulturist Larry Morgan have moved the estate into high-quality, self-reflective, low yield winemaking with a focus on sustainable farming. Although Te Mata are mainly known now for the Coleraine, the Bullnose Syrah was called the New World's best red by Steven Spurrier.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Huon Hooke
"Smoky, nutty bouquet, nougat, lots of almond meal and toasted nuttiness. Barrel ferment to the max. Almost a Te Koko style. Rich, full-bodied and concentrated. 16 OCT 2019." Drink 2019 - 2026
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"A splendid rendition of the variety: the intensely aromatic bouquet shows kaffir lime, feijoa, sweet basil and dried herb characters with a touch of almond note. The Palate is powerful and dynamic, displaying wonderful mid palate weight and vibrancy, leading to a persistent refined finish. pristine yet complex with layers of fine texture and mouth-watering flavours."
92/100 Decanter, James Button
"It goes to show that New Zealand Sauvignon is identifiable even against the most tropical of Loire Sauvignons, even though in this case the wine is from Hawke's Bay rather than Marlborough. Initially more subtle than Domaine du Pré Baron's Touraine Sauvignon, in the end it's actually the intensity that stands it apart. It has sweet notes of apricot, fresh mango and a hint of banana. There's definitely some oak influence lending woodiness to the juicy palate, with plenty of warmth and acidity. It clearly needs some more time to integrate" Drink 2019 - 2023
