2018 Stanley Estates Awatere Albarino

4 Stars Richard Caro

A highly textural and mineral wine, this shows the promise of Albarino in NZ. Stonefruit and pear flavours don't shout but harmonise beautifully with the fresh mineral nuances. In other words, its like an crisp European example but with the extra fruit brightness of its Marborough climate. Elegant and food-friendly, this is another stylish white from Stanley Estate.

Its Origins

The vineyard is nestled under Mount Tapuae-O-Uenuku (Maori" "Footprint of the Rainbow"). At the top of the Southern Alps, it strongly influences the climate, with its rain shadow bestowing low rainfall and low humidity upon the Awatere Valley. Along with sunny days and cool nights this creates perfect conditions for slow steady ripening and flavour development. Awatere grapes have a distinctive fruity yet steely and herbaceous flavour quite different to those produced elsewhere in Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 vintage)

Retasted in April 2018, the 2016 vintage (4*) was handled in tanks (60 per cent) and seasoned French oak casks (40 per cent). Still youthful, it is scented, very lively and tangy, with citrusy, limey, slightly nutty flavours, showing a distinct touch of complexity, and a finely balanced, dry (2.7 grams/litre of residual sugar), minerally finish.

17.5/20 Raymond Chan (2016 vintage)

Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, lighter on the rim. The nose is fresh and firm with aromas of white and yellow stonefruits, and white florals with subtle notes of herbs and minerals. The nose shows good depth and is refreshing and thirst-quenching. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a good concentrated core of white stonefruits and white florals with waxy mineral notes, along with herb and nutty detail. The mouthfeel is firm and features the concentrated core which is enlivened by brisk acidity, the wine flowing along a dry-textured line, carrying to a firm and taut, dry finish of stonefruits, florals and minerals. This is a firmly concentrated dry Albarino with white stonefruit, floral and mineral flavours on a brisk palate. Match with seafood and Asian fare over the next 3-4 years. From 7 y.o. vines, 60% tank-fermented, and 40% hand-picked fruit and indigenous yeast fermented in seasoned oak, to 13.0% alc. and 2.7 g/L RS, the wine aged 10 months in oak with light lees contact and 60% MLF. 17.5/20 Jun 2017 RRP $22.95
