Saint Clair Family Estate is owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, viticulture pioneers in Marlborough since 1978. Grapes were originally supplied to local wine companies; however a desire to extend the quality achieved in the vineyard through to the finished wine led to the establishment of Saint Clair Family Estate in 1994. The Saint Clair name originates from the vineyard property, first settled by the Sinclair family. Pioneer James Sinclair built one of the first homes in Blenheim and was closely associated with the early development of the town. Over time the name of the property reverted to the original Saint Clair. Saint Clair has developed six vineyards in different sites in Marlborough, including the Rapaura, Awatere, Waihopai and Omaka Valleys. Only superior fruit from the best locations for each individual variety is selected for the Saint Clair label.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell
"Intense and quite complex sauvignon blanc with passionfruit, red capsicum, struck flint, guava and ginger. Quite a weighty wine, with impressive power and an impeccable balance between sweetness and acidity that leaves a pleasantly dry finish.
Drink 2019 to 2022."
19+/20 Raymond Chan
"Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with a little depth, lighter on the rim. The nose is tightly concentrated with finely bound aromas of pungent passionfruit with fresh blackcurrant notes and sweetly ripe tropical fruits, fresh herbs and subtle notes of mouthwatering minerals. The aromatics show elegance and detail. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a concentrated core of pungent passionfruit melded with ripe tropical fruits and blackcurrant leaf, along with sweetly fresh herb notes and some thist-quenching minerals. The fruit is rich and succulent, and balanced by very fine phenolic textures, and the palate enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity. The flavours carry to an elegant, long and sustained finish. This is an elegantly concentrated and taut Sauvignon Blanc with rich and intense flavours of passionfruit, tropical fruits, blackcurrants and herbs, with subtle mineral nuances on a vibrant, refined palate. Serve with Pacific Rim fare over the next 2+ years. Fruit from the lower Wairau, cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 12.5% alc. and 2.3 g/L RS. 19.0+/20 Dec 2018 RRP $33.90"
