A classic Hawkes Bay Syrah. Nice ripeness from quality Gimblett Gravels fruit has produced a Syrah of deep fruit character with classical aromatics of berries, pepper and aniseed. A very typical and complete wine that is also charming and effortless, the Chatterer Syrah is delicious value.

Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

Yvonne Lorkin (2017 vintage)

"Don't let the lighter, crimson colour fool you, because there's a heck of a lot going on, flavour-wise. White pepper, violets, juicy red berries, cherry and soft, soft tannins make this one seriously easy, approachable syrah from the Squawking Magpie team. The acidity is fresh, hints of earthiness erupt in the mid-palate and there’s good length of flavour carrying it through."

90/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2017 vintage)

"Distinctive bouquet with aromas of black currant, dark raspberry and crushed cherry; some clove and vanilla toasty oak aromas. Dry on the palate with plenty of acidity and fine to moderate tannins - adding a firm youthful texture. Overall balanced and well made with moderate length and finish. Drink now and through 2024.

17.5-/20 Raymond Chan (2014 vintage)

"Full, near impenetrable, black-hued red with purple hues. This has an elegantly penetrating and concentrated nose of ripe blackberry and black plum fruit harmoniously melded with black pepper and an amalgam of spices and black florals. Medium-bodied, the palate is well proportioned with a dense and softly concentrated core of ripe blackberries, boysenberries and black plums, along with black pepper and spice nuances. The mouthfeel is soft with supple, mouthfilling tannins, and the roundness of the palate is enhanced by soft acidity. The wine carries to an even, mellow but well-packed finish of blackberry fruit. This is a softly concentrated Syrah with ripe flavours of blackberry and boysenberry fruit, and a supple, rounded mouthfeel. Match with lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 4+ years. A single estate wine, fruit from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged in oak. 17.5-/20 Mar 2016 RRP $24.95."
